Are diamonds naturally colorless?

Not necessarily. Diamonds can also fall into the fancy-color range (blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red, violet and yellow), either naturally or through color enhancement.

The natural color of a diamond is often determined by its atomic structure. A colorless diamond has a properly aligned atomic structure. A slight misalignment of a diamond's atoms, however, can cause it to be colored pink, while a larger misalignment can cause a brown color.

Many people don't realize that colorless diamonds can also be the result of an enhancement process. Known as the high-temperature/high-pressure process (HTHP), HTHP can realign the atomic structure of diamond to restore its colorless quality. "Bellataire" diamonds are an example of HTHP-treated diamonds.

Any diamond with a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading report has been tested for this treatment. Durability is not an issue.
