IS A BETTER CUT GRADE WORTH ALMOST $2,000?

You see two 1.02-carat diamonds with G color and VS2 clarity online, but one has a better cut grade and is $1,958 more expensive. Should you buy the better cut diamond?

In this case, absolutely!

The difference between the Gemological Institute of America's "excellent" cut and "good" cut is visible to the naked eye. Diamond B's excellent cut will definitely be more fiery, more brilliant, reflect more light and exhibit more scintillation than Diamond A's good cut. An excellent-cut diamond is the diamond you can see from far away that simply shines and comes alive with beauty.

In addition, Diamond A has a table of 63 percent. When a diamond's table is this large, there simply isn't enough crown facet area for dispersion (the separating of light into its spectral hues). Diamond B has a table of 55 percent. A small table allows for greater dispersion (fire).

Note: A small table alone will not guarantee visual fire; however, a small table accompanied by other "excellent" proportions will maximize a diamond's optical effects.
